The influence of a yoga therapy and mindfulness group on concentration, emotion regulation and skilled awareness among sexual assault survivors

The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of participation in a mindfulness-yoga group on symptoms of hyper arousal, avoidance and mindfulness in sexual assault and rape survivors.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of trauma-sensitive yoga (TSY) on sexual assault survivors. TSY is an evidence-based program designed to help survivors reconnect to their bodies in a safe, deliberate way (Emerson, 2015). Trauma survivors are often at a loss for words to discuss the trauma. Brain images demonstrate that a major language center of the brain can become deactivated in response to traumatic reminders (Stoller et al. 2012, p. 59). Testing the efficacy of non-verbal interventions, such as TSY is imperative for better serving sexual assault survivors.

The study poses 2 questions: Will TSY result in decreased symptoms of hyper arousal and avoidance as evidenced by increases in concentration and emotion regulation? Will TSY result in increased skills of mindfulness as evidenced by the capacity to identify feelings, sensations and emotions as well as increased awareness and tolerance of physical and emotional discomfort.
