Voice to Vision Series

Practical Skills for Visionary Social Change

Launched in spring 2026, the Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) Voice to Vision series brings together the larger social work and social justice community to explore innovative solutions to enduring social problems. Featuring social work and social change visionaries, the series pairs a lecture with a continuing education workshop that will help participants apply social work skills to address the problems they see in the world, translating thoughts and ideas into meaningful social change.

Housing First, Belonging and Intentional Community: Angelica Village

Thursday, April 2, 2026

Presented by GSSW alumna and Professor Emerita Jean East (MSW ’79, PhD ’95) and GSSW alumna Renata Heberton (MSW ’13).

Angelica Village is a 10-year-old community-based nonprofit organization that started with 11 U.S. formerly unhoused families and refugee youth and currently houses 154 individuals ranging in age from 1 to 76 in an area of southwest Denver and eastern Lakewood. This presentation will explore the model of intentional community as a response to homelessness and displacement, present successes and challenges of implementing an alternative model of nonprofit work, and engage the audience in dialogue about maintaining core values in the current environment and how shifting strategies in an uncertain environment are essential.
