But what is the right path for you? This page will help you to learn about some of the options available as you chart your career journey.

Navigating Your Individual Career Snapshot

Social workers are found in almost every facet of community life; therefore, there is an endless list of opportunities for you to use your skills in both traditional and non-traditional settings. Throughout a student’s time at GSSW, they will hone their skills and expertise in a certain area of social work. Each student must explore areas of post-degree social work and align their academic pathway to their career path. Career Snapshots translate these academic experiences and an intended career path into the current labor market so that you can begin to strategize your post-graduation job search.

Some students will develop a career path. GSSW Career Services invites students to explore how their social work degree can be used within non-traditional settings, utilize the below exploration tools & resources, and navigate a career path.

      DU Career & Professional Development provides students with several assessment tools to determine their strengths and interest areas. GSSW Career Services encourages students to complete an assessment & then set up a time individually to review individual results.

      • ImaginePhD - A free career exploration and planning tool specifically designed for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
      • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator - The MBTI will help you see where how your personality type fits in with a variety of careers and majors.
      • Strong Interest Inventory - The SII assessment helps identify themes that describe your career interests as well as specific majors and occupations to research.
      • CliftonStrengths - Often known as StrengthsFinder or StrengthsQuest, identifies your strongest skills and how to develop and apply them in your academic, personal, and professional life.

      • Onet Online - The O*NET Program is the nation's primary source of occupational information. Valid data are essential to understanding the rapidly changing nature of work and how it impacts the workforce and the U.S. economy. From this information, applications are developed to facilitate the development and maintenance of a skilled workforce.

      • Vault - In-depth intelligence on what it’s really like to work within an industry, company, or profession—and how to position yourself to launch and build the career of your dreams.  DU Students can explore areas of social work practice as well as other industries. Login into DU to access.

      Students are encouraged both inside and outside the classroom to connect with industry professionals that align with their career path interests.

      • Informational Interviews - Converse with a professional to learn about their career journey, the agencies that they have worked for, etc.
      • Employer Information Sessions - Attend virtual employer information sessions as they are scheduled throughout the year, register in PCO, or watch previously recorded events in the Employer & Association Video Library.

    Fellowship Opportunities

    Fellowship opportunities are an attractive avenue, particularly for students who have enjoyed their educational experience and want to continue learning in a mentored educational setting or for students with an interest in learning about and researching a niche area of social work. Although fellowships most often occur after graduation, some opportunities may take place in the summer.

    The University of Denver Office of Scholar Development and Fellowship Advising supports students and recent graduates in pursuit of nationally and internationally competitive awards. In collaboration with campus and community partners, they engage students through outreach, advising, interviews, and in some cases, university endorsement to help them identify and compete for external awards.

      APAICS Congressional Fellowship

      • The Congressional Fellowship is designed for young AAPI professionals looking to increase their experience in public policy and service. The full-time, paid, 9-month program provides fellows with opportunities to build their leadership skills, encourages political engagement and fosters interest in public service careers. Fellows are placed in congressional offices and serve as part of the legislative team.

      • The Graduate Fellowship Program is designed for exceptional emerging Latino leaders who want to immerse themselves in a specific public policy area.

      Center on Budget & Policy Priorities State Policy Fellowship

      • State Policy Fellows tackle domestic policy challenges in areas like health care, taxes, anti-poverty policy, education and criminal justice. Working in independent, highly respected policy organizations nationwide, fellows analyze the impact of the state budget and tax policy choices on low-income residents and promote positive reforms.

      Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Fellowships

      • Whether you are on a career track or deciding on which career you would like to pursue, the CDC has many diverse fellowships, internships, training and volunteer opportunities for students and professionals. Many of these opportunities provide invaluable experience and potentially offer clear-cut paths to exciting careers with the CDC.

      • The CDC E-learning Institute is designed to cultivate the skills of public health training professionals with limited experience designing or developing e-learning products.

      CDC Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program

      • The fellowship provides on-the-job training for professionals to apply expertise in information science, computer science and information technology to address current and future informatics needs. While working in CDC programs to enhance the agency’s informatics workforce, fellows help state and local health departments and international public health agencies solve complex public health informatics challenges.

      CDC Steven M. Teutsch Prevention Effectiveness Fellowship

      • The Fellowship builds CDC’s capacity to assess the effectiveness and value of public health interventions and evidence-based decision-making. The goal of this fellowship is to ensure there are well-trained health economists with expertise in policy analysis and skills to consider economic issues in public health programs.

      Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program, Rangel Graduate Fellowship Program, U.S. Department of State

      • The Rangel Graduate Fellowship aims to attract and prepare outstanding young people for careers in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State in which they can help formulate, represent and implement U.S. foreign policy.

      Climate Corps Innovative Fellow Program

      • Climate Corps is building a network of climate leaders to accelerate a clean energy future for all through the Environmental Defense Fund. Fellows gain real-world experience working at leading organizations on climate and energy projects. Fellows are graduate students who work with companies, public institutions and nonprofit organizations to identify opportunities to reduce emissions in their operations and supply chains and meet climate commitments.

      Climate Corps Program of Strategic Energy Innovations

      • Climate Corps is a full-time, 10-month paid fellowship program located mostly within California.

      Council on Social Work Education Minority Fellowship Program

      • The purpose of this program is to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral health care outcomes for racially and ethnically diverse populations by increasing the number of culturally competent master’s-level behavioral health professionals available to serve racial/ethnic minority populations.

      Columbia University Psychiatry, Health and Aging Policy Fellowship

      • The fellows program provides a unique opportunity for post-graduate professionals in health and aging to gain the experience and skills necessary to make a positive contribution to the development and implementation of health policies that affect older Americans.       Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Research Fellowship in Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care

      • Designed for social workers and other clinicians preparing for an academic research career in palliative care or psychosocial oncology, this fellowship trains early career investigators prepared to move these fields forward by conducting the highest quality research.

      Fairview Medical Center, University of Minnesota, MSW Clinical Fellow in Palliative Care

      • The fellow provides a wide range of clinical social work interventions to assist individuals, families and others to restore, enhance or protect their capacity for social functioning and coping with the consequences of life-threatening illness. The individual will develop and enhance assessment and intervention skills relevant to and within the context of palliative care practice, will function as part of an interdisciplinary team, will engage in educational conferences within the team, and will work on a chosen project to further knowledge and/or practice in the palliative care field.

      Fulbright Fellowship

      • Applicants for study/research awards design their own projects and will typically work with advisers at foreign universities or other institutes of higher education. The study/research awards are available in approximately 140 countries. Program requirements vary by country, so the applicant's first step is to familiarize themselves with the program summary for the host country.       Health and Aging Policy Fellows

      • The Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program offers two different tracks for individual placement: (1) a residential track that includes a 9-to-12-month placement in Washington, D.C., or at a state agency (as a legislative assistant in Congress, a professional staff member in an executive branch agency or in a policy organization); (2) a non-residential track that includes a health policy project and brief placement(s) throughout the year at relevant sites. The project may be focused at a global, federal, state or community level.

      Institute for Human–Animal Connection Post-MSW Research Fellowship, University of Denver

      • The Institute for Human–Animal Connection Research Fellowship program provides individuals with an MSW degree with robust training in social science research with a focus on the human–animal–environment interaction field.

      • This fellowship strives to reduce disparities in the mental health field by addressing key systemic barriers to licensure for BIPOC associate social workers.

      Mayo Clinic College of Medicine & Science Social Work Fellowship

      • The fellowship program includes clinical rotations in the following areas: transplant, cancer center, transplant inpatient, palliative, neuroscience, advance care planning, research and others. Fellows participate in all facets of clinical social work, including direct patient biopsychosocial evaluations, documentation, support groups, selection conferences, care team rounds and section staff meetings.

      CSWE Master's Minority Fellowship Program (MFP)

      • The fellowship enhances the training of full-time, master’s-level, direct-practice-focused social work students in their final year of study at a CSWE-accredited institution. Applicants must identify mental health and/or substance use disorder service delivery to racial/ethnic minority populations as their focus and be committed to seeking employment in mental health and/or substance use disorder services or prevention with the target population immediately after graduation, for at least two years. The purpose of this program is to reduce health disparities and improve behavioral health care outcomes for racially and ethnically diverse populations by increasing the number of culturally competent master’s-level behavioral health professionals available to serve racial/ethnic minority populations.

      • Fellowships provide financial resources to support students pursuing a variety of social work specialties. Foundation fellowships include the Eileen Blackey Doctoral Fellowship and the Jane B. Aron Doctoral Fellowship.

      Othering and Belonging Institute Summer Fellowship, UC Berkley

      • The fellowship is a paid research experience for individuals seeking to develop their research skills by engaging with the institute’s multidisciplinary research, analysis, policy and strategic narrative work. The purpose of the fellowship is to build the capacity and network of the next generation of researchers and community leaders who are committed to social and racial justice by providing mentorship and hands-on experience with social science research. In addition to working directly with their staff supervisor on an individual research project, fellows engage as a cohort in weekly meetings or workshops on institute frameworks, research methodologies and contemporary social justice issues throughout the summer.

      Roddenberry Fellowship

      • The Roddenberry Fellowship is a $1-million investment in innovators, community leaders and changemakers whose work has the greatest potential to protect the most vulnerable and to reinvent systems and structures that have served to oppress and disadvantage far too many for far too long. Direct impact areas include civil rights, environmental protection, immigration and refugee rights, LGBTQIA and women's rights, or health and wellness.

      The Digital Civil Society Lab Fellowships, Sanford Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society

      • The Practitioner Fellowships support social sector leaders so that they can have time to develop ideas to benefit civil society. These might include designing tools to protect civil society actors and advance racial justice, developing policy frameworks to govern the use of data, or prototyping tools to mitigate bias in emerging technologies. The program aims to catalyze and support a broad range of projects envisioned and led by the selected fellows. The fellowship provides time, space, expertise, and financial support to help turn ideas into prototypes or action, and fellows become part of a cohort that thrives with access to an intellectual community.

      Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program, U.S. Department of State/Howard University

      • The Pickering Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to promote positive change in the world. Upon successful completion of a two-year master’s degree program and fulfillment of Foreign Service entry requirements, fellows have the opportunity to work as Foreign Service Officers in accordance with applicable law and State Department policy, serving in Washington, DC, and at a U.S. embassy, consulate or diplomatic mission around the globe.

      • Designed for MSW graduates who want to gain work experience overseas and learn about social work in an international setting, the Australia Post-Graduate Certificate Program offers participants a two-year immersion focused on Australia’s social welfare profession and its social and cultural scene.

      U.S. PIRG Fellowship

      • You won’t just sit behind a desk. You’ll be out in the real world, working to protect consumers and enable citizens to lead healthier, safer, more secure lives. You’ll be recruiting new groups to join a coalition, speaking in a church basement or town hall to win a new endorsement, organizing a news event or rally, meeting with an editorial board, or doing whatever else it takes to get results. You’ll run a grassroots campaign office each summer during your fellowship where you’ll hire and manage a staff of 20 canvassers to raise money, build our organization and membership, and help win one of our key campaigns. This is a one-year program designed to prepare future leaders with U.S. PIRG. We look for smarts, leadership experience, top-notch written and verbal skills, and an eagerness to learn. We value organizing experience, including building campus groups.

      VA Interprofessional Advanced Fellowship in Addiction Treatment

      • Two-year of post-residency, post-doctoral research, education, and clinical learning opportunities to eligible physicians and associated health professionals at seven VA Medical Centers across the nation. Fellows spend 75% of their time in research and education and 25% in clinical care at selected VA sites.

      Youthroots GIV Fellowship

      • The GIV Fellowship is a 15-week foundation internship program. Fellows split their time between learning about philanthropy as a cohort and being embedded in host foundations to gain hands-on experience in the sector. Through this process, we seek to achieve the following objectives: provide opportunities for youth to discover and explore potential careers in the philanthropic and nonprofit fields; improve the ability of the philanthropic sector to meet community needs by including youth voice, expertise, and wisdom in foundation strategies; and develop a pipeline for youth from communities underrepresented in philanthropy to enter the field.

      Women’s Congressional Fellowship on Women and Public Policy

      • The fellowships are extended each year to a select number of students pursuing a graduate degree or those who have recently completed a master’s, doctorate or professional degree with a proven commitment to equity for women.

      Albert Einstein College of Medicine Fellowship

      • The Palliative Care Social Work Fellowship is a one-year, full-time position from July through June. The goal of the fellowship is to develop specialty-trained palliative care social workers who will contribute to the care of seriously ill older adults in underserved communities in New York City and become future leaders in this field.

      Counseling and Consultation Service at Ohio State University Clinical Fellowship

      • The mission of the Counseling and Consultation Service (CCS) is to provide a comprehensive array of mental health services to assess, prevent, treat and resolve the mental health issues of OSU students. More specifically, we promote the personal well-being and academic success of students by providing comprehensive individual and group mental health services, psycho-educational prevention and outreach programming; by influencing the community as a nurturing environment through support, advocacy and education/training; by enhancing the academic quality of life; and by supporting the emotional, relational and intellectual development of the students served and the mental health professionals in training.

      Denver Family Institute Training Program

      • Two-year post-graduate certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy. DFI is a hands-on, experiential training program where students deepen their ability to work from a strength-based therapeutic model and develop their own theory of change in their work with couples, families and individuals.

      Emory University Counseling & Psychological Services, Post-MSW Graduate Fellowship

      • This is a paid advanced clinical training program designed for the pre-licensed clinical social worker to advance and deepen their clinical skills using a brief therapy model, as well as some longer-term psychotherapy experience. Services provided will typically include individual, couple and group modalities. Fellows gain supervised experience providing diagnostic assessments, brief psychotherapy, outreach, case management and crisis intervention. The center is comprised of a multidisciplinary senior staff of social workers and psychologists, along with trainees in both disciplines.

      Kaiser Permanente Fellowship

      • Kaiser Permanente Northern California offers training via its post-master’s fellowship program, which provides advanced training and clinical supervision. The fellowship meets the requirements for supervised training for associate marriage and family therapists, associate clinical social workers, and associate professional clinical counselors working toward licensure and follows guidelines set forth by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

      • The post-graduate fellowship program is an opportunity for pre-licensed mental health clinicians who have completed a master's/doctoral degree in counseling or clinical psychology, social work, school counseling or marriage and family therapy.       • The purpose of the Prevention Fellowship Program administered by the Mountain Plains Prevention Technology Transfer Center for Region 8 is to develop a knowledgeable and well-trained cadre of prevention fellows in the area of substance use/misuse prevention and prepare them to achieve certification from the International Certificate & Reciprocity Consortium Certified Prevention Specialist exam.

      Rose and Jacob Ruderman Post Masters Fellowship

      • The post-master's fellowship in cognitive neurology social work was originally developed at Beth Israel Hospital by a group of senior clinical social workers who were committed to teaching advanced-level specialty skills of working with the elderly in a health care setting.

      TEXAS A&M College of Medicine Fellowship

      • The Social Work Post Graduate Program provides 1–2 year of post-master's graduate training with extensive clinical experience, supervision and educational opportunities in clinical social work while working toward independent licensure.

      University of Colorado–Boulder Counseling Fellowship

      • Social Work Post-Masters Fellowships are for candidates who have completed a master’s degree in social work and who need supervised clinical experience to obtain licensure. Positions are a 40-hour/week, two-year commitment.

      University of North Carolina Chapel Hill: The Counseling and Psychological Services Post MSW Social Work Fellow

      • Counseling and Psychological Services provides psychological services to all students enrolled at UNC Chapel Hill who have paid the student health fee. The psychological/counseling services provide individual, couples, and group therapy, same-day triage appointments, crisis intervention, outreach services and medication evaluation and management. The team also provides risk assessment evaluation for the Dean of Students office.

      University of Washington: Integrated Care Fellowship

      • In recognition of the burden of disease and mortality associated with substance use disorders, the Veterans Health Administration established the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System Center of Excellence in Substance Addiction Treatment and Education, which serves as a national resource to improve the quality, clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of health care for veterans with substance use disorders.
