Child, Family & School
Connect with a GSSW Pathway group within Crimson Constellation: Children & Youth ǀ Child Welfare ǀ Family Systems
Social workers provide social services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families and maximize the family well-being and academic functioning of children. They may assist parents, arrange adoptions and find foster homes for abandoned or abused children.
School social workers provide vital services to schools through assessment, counseling, conflict mediation, resiliency building, alternatives to violence and gangs, attendance monitoring, community referral and liaison work, child abuse reporting, school dropout prevention, youth suicide prevention and intervention, crisis intervention, and child and family advocacy.
Typical Degree/Licensure Requirements
An MSW is required for some child welfare positions. Most other positions will require MSW > LSW/SWC > LCSW. School requirements are regulated by states and can include a temporary permit to work within a school system until you meet your LSW requirements (for example, TEE for the state of Colorado); many states also have specific field placement requirements.
A license is often required for entry-level positions. Graduates should consider obtaining their LSW (or SWC) and LCSW as soon as possible for job eligibility and promotion. More information is available on the Licensure page. School Social Workers also will need a Colorado School Social Work Certification, as determined by the Colorado Department of Education requirements. If you will be working outside of Colorado, visit the Licensure page for your state licensure requirements.

Corporate
Connect with a GSSW Pathway group within Crimson Constellation: Charting My Own Path ǀ Organizational Leadership & Policy Practice
Corporate social workers take on many roles, from helping employees manage the demands of work, life and mental health issues to helping companies build positive relationships with their communities. They work within public and private corporations in industries such as construction, technology and banking, using their social work experience in areas such as employee assistance programs; diversity, equity and inclusion; human resources; and corporate social responsibility.
Typical Degree/Licensure Requirements
Because this is considered a non-traditional career path for social workers, most positions will not have typical social work titles. You will need to market your transferrable skills to align with expectations in a corporate setting. Persistence and networking will be important as you speak with hiring managers unfamiliar with your skill set.
An LSW is helpful but often not required for entry-level positions. Graduates should consider obtaining their LSW (or SWC) and LCSW as soon as possible for job eligibility and promotion. You will most likely need to find an LCSW supervisor independently since you may be one of the only social workers within the organization. GSSW provides some supervision resources on the Licensure page. If you will be working outside of Colorado, visit the Licensure page for your state licensure requirements.
Some individuals consider a GSSW/MBA dual degree or additional training to elevate and align their social work and business skill sets. For instance, within the University of Denver community consider:

Ecology & Environmental Justice
Connect with a GSSW Pathway group within Crimson Constellation: Ecological & Environmental Justice
Social workers address environmental crises and protect and restore the well-being of people, other species and the planet. Issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, natural resource depletion and other urgent environmental problems are rooted in structural inequalities, oppression, extractive economies and a lack of understanding of social–ecological systems and interdependencies. This area of social work looks at the systems that contribute to the problems and seeks solutions.
Your work in the social work field could include:
- Developing and advocating for policies that promote the health of people and the planet
- Working on projects to support circular and regenerative economies locally, nationally or internationally
- Working with nongovernmental organizations and local, regional and national governments on issues such as environmental racism, air pollution, food security, biodiversity preservation and energy justice
- Applying social–ecological systems science and understanding in all work settings to improve relationships humans have with other species and the natural environment
Typical Degree/Licensure RequirementsBecause this is considered a non-traditional career path for social workers, most positions will not have typical social work titles. You will need to market your transferrable skills to align with expectations in a nonprofit, governmental or corporate setting. Persistence and networking will be important as you speak with hiring managers unfamiliar with your skill set. Unless you want to work in higher education, a master's degree is considered the terminal degree. In some areas, it is helpful to have a science background.
Transferrable skills to showcase in a job search can include: impact assessments, benefit and harm assessments, program development, building code understanding, socioenvironmental impact assessments, conflict resolution, dialoguing across differences, coalition building, policy advocacy, strategic planning and communication tools (infographics, podcasts, websites, social media, etc.).
A clinical license is not required for most entry-level positions. Most operate successfully with their MSW degree.
