A Therapy Farm Built on Access and Inclusion
Pamela Wheeler, Animals and Human Health Certificate '21
Pamela Wheeler is a licensed mental health practitioner who founded UBU Therapy Farms in Lincoln, Nebraska where children can learn socio-emotional skills and interact with animals in a therapeutic setting. UBU Therapy Farms is home to various farm animals such as calves, goats, turkeys, cats, and dogs. Wheeler previously worked as a crisis response therapist and sought out the Animals and Human Health professional development certificate because she wanted to begin her own practice specializing in the inclusion of animals alongside treatment
Wheeler stated, “the Animals and Human Health Certificate met and exceeded my expectations and provided me with the information that I need to practice in this field knowledgeably, safely and ethically. More importantly, the program gave me the confidence I lacked to make the final steps in opening my practice on my farm." Wheeler and her husband purchased the farm in 2018 with the desire to create UBU Therapy Farms, a place that connects people of all abilities with animals and nature. The name UBU Therapy Farms was selected to signify their welcoming and inclusive environment, a place where you can simply be you! "The community has been extremely receptive, especially my special needs clients, and I am thrilled to offer clinical and therapeutic services while spending time with my amazing animals. It is, most definitely, a dream come true,” shared Wheeler.
