Professional Biography
Catherine Alter served as dean of the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work (GSSW) from 1996–2006, leading the school’s transformation from a strong regional program to a nationally recognized institution. Under her leadership, GSSW launched the Four Corners MSW Program, established certificates in trauma, Latino/a social work, and animal-assisted social work, and significantly expanded student financial aid. She also raised $11 million to renovate and expand Craig Hall into a state-of-the-art learning and community hub.

A lifelong learner, she also earned a diploma in fiber arts and ran a weaving business before donating her equipment to support hurricane relief efforts.
Today, Alter continues to advance social justice and education as a grant writing consultant for nonprofits nationwide and as faculty with Lifestyle Medicine University, where she develops curriculum, teaches, and mentors doctoral students across the globe.
Known for her humor, creativity, and dedication to service, Alter remains an active voice in building stronger communities and advancing equity.
