Professional Biography

Dr. Jean East has practiced social work since 1975 in the Denver Metro community. She began her work in clinical work with youth and families and after completing her MSW in 1979 began her career in leadership roles at the City of Lakewood and Catholic Community Services and then joined GSSW in the field department. She received her PhD in 1995 and joined the faculty at GSSW in 1996, led the Distance Education program and served as Associate Dean. In 1996 she co-founded, with Sue Kenney, MSW 1979,  a non-profit, Project WISE, which for 20 years responded to the new TANF legislation by promoting women's empowerment and advocacy. Dr. East retired in 2018 and continues to support social justice work. She helped to start another non-profit, Angelica Village, in 2016 and still supports their work creating a community focused on belonging for those who have experienced being unhoused, both U.S and immigrant/refugee youth and families.  Currently Dr. East supports advocacy and direct service with and on behalf of immigrant and refugee families.
