What I do

Katie received a BSW and MSW from University of Nevada, Reno. She has experience at the macro-level in policy development, legislative activism, and in “the field” as a community organizer. While completing her MSW, she worked with the American Civil Liberties Union, lobbying at the Nevada State Legislature on juvenile justice bills. She has worked in direct practice as a school social worker on a federal grant providing services to families with histories of violence and trauma. Most recently, she was an assessment counselor at an inpatient mental health hospital. Her direct practice experience contributed to her research interest in the intersection of mental health and homelessness and homelessness as a social determinant of health.
