GSSW has three criteria for our decision making about COVID-19: follow public health science and federal, state, and local mandates; ensure continuity of learning and work to the extent possible; and promote individual well-being. These criteria guide GSSW’s leadership team as we make critical decisions regarding COVID-19 and our community’s response.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected some students' ability to start either the Advanced-Standing MSW Program in Summer 2020 or the Two-Year MSW Program in Fall 2020. Because of this, we have added additional start dates and program tracks. These options are available to all admitted students if you need the extra flexibility due to extenuating circumstances that require a later start. A survey link will be sent via email the week of April 27 so you can declare your start date and curriculum. We ask that you declare by June 15, 2020.

We know this is a challenging time to envision your future MSW journey, so we’ve put together a list of frequently asked questions to provide some clarity. The responses to these questions are based on the most recent information provided to us by the University’s senior leadership.
Please continue to reference this page. We will update the answers to these questions as we receive new information about the rapidly changing conditions related to the COVID-19 crisis.
Tuition & Financial Aid
If you have specific financial aid questions, please reach out to our admission team via email or phone.
If you were admitted prior to May 1, the deposit deadline for both the 2020 Advanced-Standing and Two-Year MSW Programs has passed. However, we hope you will still consider submitting a deposit and joining our upcoming class. Please fill out a Deposit Deadline Extension Request Form and we will contact you soon about next steps.
If you were admitted after May 1, the deposit deadline is July 15.
As long as you register for at least 12 credits each quarter, your merit scholarship will not change. However, if the new curriculum plan you have chosen requires you to take summer credits and it is less than 12, you will still receive your merit scholarship disbursement for summer quarter. If you have questions about your merit scholarship, please email Victoria.Veres@du.edu, associate director of enrollment and financial aid. If you have federal loan questions, please email the University financial aid office at finaid@du.edu.
Work-study positions are available for all start dates, and work-study positions can be conducted remotely if needed due to COVID-19 campus closures.
If you plan to start in January 2021, you must accept your work-study funds by July 1, 2020, and secure a position by Oct. 15, 2020; you will begin your work-study position in January 2021.
Research assistantships are available for all start dates, and assistantships can be conducted remotely if needed due to COVID-19 campus closures. Contact Professor Jennifer Bellamy for more information about available assistantship positions.
The DU library, health services and counseling services are available to you remotely; physical spaces such as study rooms are not available at this time. Although GSSW courses are online this summer, most campus resources are still available, and therefore, resource reimbursement does not apply. This may change as decisions about summer closures evolve. We will provide more information when it is available.
Starting in summer 2020, tuition will be $1,222 per credit hour. Regardless of which program start date you choose, you will only pay for the number of credits you take each quarter. In the curriculum plans above, you can view total credits per quarter.

MSW Program
If you have academic or field related questions, we encourage you to sign up for an Advising Session (if you have yet to attend or sign up) or email Kate Ross, director of the Denver Campus MSW Program.
Following public health guidance, select on-campus options are available for you if you wish to enroll in them. However, students could select to take all courses in an online format, and all paths toward concentration and certificate requirements are available in an online format.
Guidelines for campus reopening in fall 2020:
All classes will be prepared for an online, flipped format in which 90 minutes of content is provided asynchronously and 90 minutes of activities may occur in a live session (either on-campus or on Zoom).
On-campus sections will only run if state, local, and university public health guidelines permit it - which is currently allowed at 50% capacity within a classroom.
Per DU or public health guidance, we may have to switch to fully online options, at any point during the quarter.
Courses will be ready to accommodate students to temporarily engage in learning virtually, if a student is required to self-isolate.
Any student, staff, or faculty who comes to the DU Campus must abide by DU-required social distancing and health practices (i.e., reduced class sizes, staggered times, engaging in DU public health training(s), mask-wearing, health screenings, compliance with contact tracing protocols while on campus and prohibitions against traveling out-of-state).
On-campus course sections were selected per faculty recommendations based on course content which benefits the most from face-to-face learning. We also make adjustments to the schedule and course offerings based on student interest in the various course formats.
Although both programs are currently using an online modality for teaching, there are many differences between our online and on-campus programs. MSW@Denver has two concentrations, while the Denver Campus MSW Program has eight concentrations and three certificates. MSW@Denver has a more constrained field options, and students do not have faculty advisors. With the Denver Campus MSW Program, you choose your field internship and also receive mentorship from full-time faculty advisors who are based on the Denver campus. As of now, only summer classes for Advanced-Standing students will be online. Although decisions pertaining to the pandemic evolve daily, we plan to be on campus with in-person classes by fall quarter.
That will depend on the type of field internship you’re looking for. For example, school social work may not be a possibility with a spring/summer field placement. However, we work with 700+ field agencies, so there are still plenty of internship options to choose from if you start in January 2021. You should discuss your specific needs with your field advisor. If you have not been assigned a field advisor, you will receive your advisor after you submit your deposit and begin the field internship search process.
Our field placements are equipped to host student interns in a virtual environment. Many agencies have transitioned to providing remote services, including telehealth and telebehavioral health services. If you have a specific question about field education, please email field@du.edu.
At this time, we do not know whether international courses and internships will be allowed in the 2020 winter interterm quarter. We will continue to watch the recommendations from the Department of State for each country and will send additional information when it is available.
All admissions-related events and one-on-one visits are virtual. GSSW is not open for on-campus visitors at this time. We will notify you by email when the campus is open for visitors. As an alternative to a campus visit, we encourage you to take our virtual campus tour or schedule a telephone call or virtual meeting with a member of our enrollment team.
If you would like to schedule a telephone call or virtual meeting for a time outside of those listed on our website, please email gsswadmission@du.edu and we will work with your schedule.
